India is a land of festivals, where people from different religions coexist harmoniously. The wide variety of festivals celebrated in India is a true manifestation of its rich culture and traditions. There are many Indian festivals and celebrations, the most exciting of which are mentioned below. While the celebrations happen all over the year, October till January is the time when the country can be seen at its vibrant best.

HOLI

Holi is one of the major festival of India and is the most vibrant of all. The joys of Holi knows no bound. The festival is celebrated across the four corners of India or rather across the globe. The festival is filled with so much fun and frolic that the very mention of the word 'Holi' draws smile and enthusiasm amongst the people. Holi also celebrates the arrival of Spring, a season of joy and hope

DIWALI

The Diwali festival marks the beginning of a new year in the Hindu calendar in India. It celebrates the return of Lord Ram from his fourteen years of exile in the forests after defeating the ten-headed King Ravana who had abducted his wife Sita. Hanuman (the monkey god) and Laxman (Ram’s younger brother) are other important characters in Ramayana, the ancient epic poem about Ram, Sita and righteousness. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and hope over despair.

TAK TOK FESTIVAL

KUMBH MELA

Kumbh Mela, also called Kumbha Mela, in Hinduism, religious festival that is celebrated four times over the course of 12 years, the site of the observance rotating between four pilgrimage places on four sacred rivers—at Haridwar on the Ganges River, at Ujjain on the Shipra, at Nashik on the Godavari, and at Prayag (modern Prayagraj) at the confluence of the Ganges, the Jamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati. Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun.

LADAKH FESTIVAL

Karsha Gustor festival, is celebrated at Karsha monastery, the largest one in Zanskar in terms of the resident months, as it is home to around 100 lamas. This festival is celebrated remembering the victory of good over evil, at this largest Geluk-pa (Yellow Hat) monastery that is located on the slopes of Zanskar mountains, right high above the Padum plain. During the festival, a Black Hat Dance is performed. Then there is also a masked dance (performed by the monks) on the same line as Chaam .

PONGAL

Pongal is a significant festival of Tamil Nadu and is celebrated for four days. The first day is known as Bhogi, in which people throw away or burn the old household things and go to buy the new ones. It signifies the beginning of a new cycle. The next day is called Perum or Surya Pongal. It is the most imperativeday of Pongal. On this day, people offer prayers to Lord Surya and hence pay homage to sun. The houses are decorated with special design called Kolam.

ONAM

Marking the end of monsoons and welcoming the harvest season, this Kerala festival, Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated annually, all over India with its origin in the Kerala state. One of the biggest festivals of the state, Onam is celebrated for 10 days during the Malayalam month of Chingam which fills the heart of people with gaiety, and brings them together to be a part of this vibrant and cultural festival. The festivities of Onam reflects the traditions and culture of Kerala .

LAMAYURU FESTIVAL

The unique feature of this festival is the dance. The masked dance or the chaam dance is the most popular item. This dance is performed by all the Lamas in circles. These Lamas cover their faces with large colourful masks. These masks are made up of paper and then local people make an effort to colour them using plaster. Along with dance music is also another interesting feature of this festival. Songs related to this festival is played and performed by the local people along with drum beats.

HEMIS FESTIVAL

Hemis Festival One of the most popular monastic festivals of Ladakh, Hemis festival is organized in the month of June for the commemoration of the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet. The monks get dressed in vibrant brocade robes and wear colorful facial masks for performing a sacred dance drama of his life and its mission. This 3-day festival is organized, from 9th to 11th June, particularly the monkey year festival that arrives in a cycle of 12 years.

BIHU

Bihu is a secular festival that is celebrated by people from all parts of Assam irrespective of caste creed or religious background. The first Bihu is known as the Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu, which is celebrated in the month of April. The second Bihu is known as Kati Bihu or Kongali Bihu, which is celebrated during the month of October and finally there is Magh Bihu, which is observed during the month of January.Bihu is a traditional festival where people cook traditional meals using rice .

MYSORE DUSSEHRA

The Mysore Dasara or the Navarathri is a 10-day festival that falls in the month of September or October. NAVRATRI

Navratri, meaning 'nine nights', is one of the most popular and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in many parts of India. Each night, all over the state, villages and cities alike, people gather in open spaces to celebrate feminine divinity, referred to as Shakti.

HORNBILL

The tribes of Nagaland celebrate their festivals with appreciation and fervor. More than 60% of the population of Nagaland depends on agriculture and therefore most of their festivals revolve around agriculture. They consider their festivals sacred and so participation in these festivals is essential. To encourage inter-tribal interaction and to promote cultural heritage of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland organizes the Hornbill Festival every year in the first week of December.

HOLA MAHOLLA

“Hola Mohalla” is an annual festival of Sikhs celebrated at the city of Ananadpur Sahib in Rupnagar (Ropar) district of Punjab province of western India. Hola Mohalla is celebrated on the second day of Chett month, which is the first month of Nanakshahi calendar, a lunar calendar of Sikhism.The festivities of Hola Mohalla coincide with holi in March or may fall on the next day of holi.It is grand festival marking the reverence of Sikh gurus and displaying athletic and warrior skills .
